What’s new on the Garmin Edge 1060

Garmin describes the Edge 1060 as its most advanced cycling computer yet. For Edge 1050 owners, Garmin says the biggest change is connectivity and convenience: you can control it by voice, hear prompts through the speaker and message other riders without taking your hands off the bars.

Hands-free voice control

Garmin Edge 1060 screen

This is the big one. The Edge 1060 has a built-in microphone, so you can say “Okay, Garmin” and then ask for what you need. For example, you can ask for your heart rate, find the nearest coffee stop or report a pothole. As a result, both hands stay on the bars. Also, with a paired phone, you can send and hear voice messages through the Garmin Messenger app. Garmin notes that voice control works in select languages and can vary with riding conditions.

Extra buttons for wet days and gloves

The Edge 1050 leans on its touchscreen for menus, which can be fiddly in the rain or with winter gloves. However, the Edge 1060 adds side buttons, so you can get around the unit without touching the screen. Meanwhile, the touchscreen is still there when you want it.

Smaller and lighter

The Edge 1060 weighs 142 g, which is 19 g less than the Edge 1050. It’s also 11.5 mm shorter. Plus, it keeps the same 3.5-inch screen, so you lose nothing in readability.

Smarter routing

  • Route Options – compare several ways to a destination by ride time, climbing and bike type.
  • Route Previews – see distance, estimated time, traffic and reported hazards before you roll out.
  • Up Ahead – track the nearest cafés, toilets or service stations along your route.
  • Free Flow Routing – find routes with the fewest stops and intersections, ideal for keeping your speed up in training.
  • Road closure alerts – warnings about closures reported by other Garmin riders, on top of existing hazard alerts. You need a paired phone and the Garmin Connect app.

Reverse charging

In a pinch, the Edge 1060 can top up a Varia light, your phone or another device over USB-C. Garmin says this isn’t meant for charging while you ride.

What stays the same as the Edge 1050

Under the hood, a lot carries over. Both units share the same bright 3.5-inch screen, the same claimed battery life and the same 64 GB of storage. Both also include the speaker for turn prompts and the digital bike bell. Also, the training tools are the same family: real-time stamina, power guide, free Garmin Cycling Coach plans, TrainingPeaks workout sync and GroupRide with in-ride messaging, live locations and climb leaderboards. So, if you mainly train with power and follow structured workouts, both units will do the job well.

Garmin Edge 1060 or Edge 1050: which should you choose?

  • Choose the Edge 1060 if you want to talk to your computer, ride a lot in the wet or in gloves, or want the lightest big-screen Edge.
  • Choose the Edge 1050 if you won’t use voice control. You get the same screen, battery and training tools for less.
  • Already own an Edge 1050? There’s little reason to upgrade unless voice control or buttons matter to you. Some of the new routing tools may also reach the 1050 by software update, though Garmin hasn’t confirmed which.
  • Want a smaller unit? Look at the Garmin Edge 850, which has buttons and a touchscreen in a more compact size.

Pair it with a Garmin radar

Both Edges pair with Garmin’s Varia radar lights, which warn you about cars approaching from behind. The Garmin Varia RTL515 radar tail light is a popular choice for Beach Road and city riding.
