Shop Basso bikes at Port Melbourne Cycles, your Melbourne Basso dealer. Basso is a family-run Italian bike brand from the Veneto, the cycling heartland at the foot of Monte Grappa. We stock the full range of Basso road and gravel bikes, built to order in Italy and fitted in our Port Melbourne workshop.
The story of Basso bikes
Basso began in 1974, when Alcide Basso started building steel frames in his parents’ garage near Vicenza. He founded the company in 1977. His brother, Marino Basso, had won the road world championship in Gap, France, in 1972, so racing was in the family from day one.
Early orders came from the UK and Germany, and in 1979 Eddy Merckx visited the workshop. Basso bought the historic Pogliaghi name in 1989, then made its first carbon frame in 1996. Around 2000 came the first Diamante, which is still Basso’s signature race bike today.
Today Basso is run by the second generation of the family, with Alessandro Basso as CEO. It is part of the family’s Stardue group, alongside the component brand Microtech. Frames are designed in Italy, made from Toray carbon and finished with water-based paints in Basso’s own paint shop. Its motto sums it up: “Ride, Perfected”.
Which Basso bike is right for you?
- Basso SV – the aero all-rounder. “Sempre Veloce” means “always fast”, but it is built for real riders, with a 780 g frame and room for 35 mm tyres.
- Basso Diamante – the lightweight race bike, now in its eighth generation, made for climbing and fast descents.
- Basso Astra – the endurance road bike, with calmer handling, a taller front end and 35 mm tyre clearance.
- Basso Palta III – the gravel bike. “Palta” means “mud” in the Veneto dialect, and this one has a 970 g frame and room for 50 mm tyres.
