Shimano Ultegra PD-R8200: SPD-SLR performance at the Ultegra price
The Ultegra PD-R8200 pedals bring Shimano’s new SPD-SLR platform down a tier. They share the Dura-Ace PD-R9300’s low stack height, wider catch area and new cleat interface, but use a carbon-composite body with a stainless-steel contact plate instead of the Dura-Ace’s lighter construction. So you get the same feel at the pedal for $90 less.
What changed with SPD-SLR is the whole interface. The shoe sits 2.3 mm closer to the axle than on the previous generation, the pedal rests at a flatter angle so it catches the cleat more easily when you set off, and the cleat itself is smaller and lighter. Shimano quotes the Dura-Ace version as 11 per cent stiffer than this pedal, which tells you how close the two are.

SPD-SLR is a new cleat standard. The PD-R8200 only works with SPD-SLR cleats (CL-SL100 to CL-SL130). Your existing SPD-SL cleats will not clip in. Any three-bolt road shoe will take the new cleats; older shoes and other brands should use the CL-SL130 cleat for full fore-aft adjustment.
